Pulse of Web Innovation at the dawn of 2009: Slow

I came across an interesting piece of data that gave me a "Pulse" for entrepreneurship in the WEB space as 2008 clocked out. I am not sure if it has always been like this or if its an indicator of the times and where we are with our economy.

What i found by searching for a website I recently bought is a sample list of websites registered (purchased) on December 18, 2008. It is a list of the 100,000+++ websites registered on that day.

A quick scan of the list shows that most of the sites could be classified as being in the Web Porn niche market. Few sites in the list stood to be innovative Web ventures (my site iplacemarks.com was of course one of the exceptions in being an attempt to change how retail brands and mobile devices mix)

I assume that the list i got is a representative sample. You can see the list below.

I think its an interesting insight and perspective into the Pulse of Web/Mobile/IT entrepreneurship. Although this is an exploration and extrapolation of an idea quiet far beyond the data i have.
I am assuming that most websites registered are now vehicles to turn a profit through established business models. Meaning that innovation has slowed. There are lots of other blog posts and articles about measuring the Pulse of innovation as a rate of VC funds flowing into new start ups. Its common knowledge in the start up community that VC funds have "circl3d their wagons" and are saving their dollars for their existing portfolios instead of looking for new plays. Although some like Accel seem to be striking while everyone else is weak (they raised a cool 1 Billion recently).

So i would not look to the Web to launch too many new businesses that put the 150,000 or so techies back in business. I think the techies will be forced to adapt with the times, specifically they will be forced to look towards mobile skies. I think this recession's timing and the follow on cut offs at web companies is very fortuitously timed with a rapid jump in mobile itnernet adoption and usage.

I have a hunch that the shedding of techies from the web space will lead to an influx of new talent, ideas, and experience to Mobile, specifically the mobile web.

I expect mobile to drive the entrepreneurial growth and companies to help tech recover from this recession.

I like it because it is a very simple yet powerful technology concept.
Hopefully it will let me explore Interactive Marketing from the Agency perspective, and further my thoughts on mobile advertising beyond the usual suspects of admob.com, google, etc


iPlacemarks will achieve 2 simple goals for users:
- a way to make iPhone navigation User experiences better
- a way to fix a UX issue in mobile google maps.

iPlacemarks metrics of success:
I will measure the success of this my seeing how far i get towards to simple metrics:
- Does iPlacemarks list Starbucks as a client ?
- Is iPlacemarks featured on Apple.com (if Tapulous pulled it off with Tap Tap Revenge, i should be able to get at least close to it)

- Inspired by Apple's Solution to mobile app distribution (1 click launch of apps/ easy discovery to acquire them).
- Inspired by Staples "Easy Button" TV ads.
- Inspired by wanting to have an Easy Button on my iPhone for places i searcch for repeatedly.
